New Window Eyebrows

Today I am very excited for two reasons. A major-ish project was completed at the house on the weekend and I'm thrilled to announce The Decorating Forum is featuring my little blog this week.
Pop on over to visit and share in chat and ideas regarding all things design, decorating and more!

We purchased our home in 2010 and one of the first things I noticed was the absence of awnings over some of the windows. Immediately I knew I could not live without some form of protection to stop rain coming through four windows on the bedroom wing. The house was architecturally designed in the early nineties but fancy not including awnings in a sub-tropical climate. While it may have been a trend back then I knew for my own peace of mind we would need to rectify the situation. During a hot Queensland summer I prefer to keep windows open for ventilation and last summer I was driven crazy because as soon as rain fell I would holler 'Rain' and those at home would rip through the house shutting these windows.
So..behold the beauty of our new window eyebrows!

My major wish before next summer was to get awnings in place. Mr red roses is very nifty at researching and sourcing requirements we need for this house renovation and he found this fabulous company online who make up awnings to your specifications. Hubs is most handy so while we still had the use of painters scaffolding he set to getting these babies up over the past week (one wing of the house is rather frighteningly high so we needed scaffolding to paint the exterior which was recently completed).

Oh yes he wears a harness to save falling...a must for this type of work. Just before I snapped this photo I was on the ground working the rope pulley to hoist the awnings up to be fitted on brackets. The design we chose blends in superbly and I couldn't be happier. Now I have the perfect solution to prevent rain pouring in and these windows and this wing of the house has been given much needed character.

I find myself stopping to admire the awnings and do a little happy dance not only as I no longer need to fear a sudden rain shower but the aesthetic is now softer and appealing to the eye.

I hope you love the windows new eyebrows as much as I do.

Annie xx

  1. Hi Annie we are so excited to be featuring your lovely blog this week on the Decorating Forum.
The eyebrows look wonderful. I can never understand why people don't design a house to suit the weather conditions. Eaves and verandahs make a huge difference here in Perth. But the eyebrows also add so much style to the house. Well done:)

  2. They look fabulous, perhaps they will make it a tad cooler too with the windows shaded.

  4. Hi Annie. Love the window's eyebrows. It looks like you have a lovely home and in such a beautiful setting. Do tell Mr Red Roses he appears to have a very nice set of pins on him!!!

  5. They look great! Here we are in the same country yet at opposite ends the weather is so different. Open windows and rain are just not something we ever have to think about here. It's not that we don't get storms (not many) but we tend to close the house up when it's hot so it stays cool in. Different designed houses work in different ways.

  6. The eyebrows are perfect, and great action on the pulley there. Mr Red Roses is a Very Handy Man indeed! Our last house had the same problem, no eaves or awnings, which is really silly in the tropics. It will be so much easier for you this summer. xx

  9. Thanks everyone and so glad you all like the eyebrows! Well be a blessing for sure and yes will also keep out horrid hot sun on the western side of the house. Amazing how this simple addition has made such a huge difference to a once flat and boring part of the house. xx

  10. I've never heard the term eyebrows for this feature. I like the way they look and I am sure they will perform well and last a long time.
It must keep things cooler inside too.
Congrats on the Decorating Forum showcasing your blog!

  12. Looks great. I agree - why do people build houses in Queensland that don't take into account the weather? We have the tiniest eaves on our house which give very little protection??? Congratulations on the Decorating Emporium.

  13. Eyebrows! We need to add these to one of our windows to keep the sun off my furniture and hard woods. Great job Annie!
