Beloved Pieces of Furniture

As I pondered what to write for this post I decided to stick with another home theme to tie in nicely with The Decorating Forum (my little blog is featured this week).

The last four years has been tumultuous with selling an acreage property after renovating the old Queenslander house over two decades, the home in which we raised our family.
Then renovating a brick and tile house to live in all while searching for our present home which involved a relentless eighteen month search, then toil over this major renovation and redecoration spanning five months to revitalise this 1990's design, then sell the interim brick house, then move into this piece of paradise and we are still transforming this house.
Phew are you tired from reading that...you can imagine why it's taken me a year to come up for air and I still get myself confused trying to explain the sequence of events!

The old farmhouse we lovingly filled with antique pieces only to decide on a fresh start in a modern architecturally designed build. Hence this style of furniture did not blend at all with the modern aesthetic. Big decisions ensued and so we sold most of our furniture. Except for certain pieces which  hold sentimental value. The big old dining table is made from recycled baltic pine and I discovered her after a long search, when I was pregnant with our first child twenty-six years ago. Countless happy memories emanate from her scratched, chipped service..family gatherings, children's homework, painting and play dough extravaganzas. In the old house antique spindle back chairs encircled this table but now a modern and comfortable padded chair surrounds her.
In fact the kitchen we designed was purposely planned around this dining table. While entertaining I like to have my family or guests seated within close range to be part of the action.

The teak console was my parents and this created quite the dilemma. It included an additional top piece with glass doors and shelves which sat on top. In total it just didn't blend but the decision was made during the move when the glass shelves shattered (our fault not the moving company) and so the top was donated to charity. I procrastinated about this inclusion but am now comfortable with the aesthetic it casts over the predominately white decor of my favourite room.

The rocking chair. Sourced for the birth of our first baby for moi to sit and feed and rock the babes to sleep. You know I nearly lost this chair and one day I will share the story. Never again will I let this piece escape my clutches. Mr red roses restored her as a surprise for my 50th birthday. I cried with joy.
Now I sit in the sun in my pretty room and ponder life and all it's mysteries.

Last but not least the duchess I saved my pennies to buy when the children were little. She was in a sad state when we bought her at auction but after being lovingly restored she has been a constant in our bedroom. An old piece in a modern room but it works.
My mother's beloved bedroom chair. Need I say more, this chair is cherished because it was my mum's and she adored it, not to sit in mind, purely for show!

I have enjoyed sharing this trip down memory lane. At the time of selling our prized furniture and my parents inherited bits and bobs (an old rambling farmhouse always has room for just another acquisition) I felt sad but comes a time in our lives when we need to let go of the past and downsize. As much as we wish to hold onto everything accumulated over many years it's not feasible.

Except for those rare pieces which grab hold of our hearts and won't let go.

New Window Eyebrows

Today I am very excited for two reasons. A major-ish project was completed at the house on the weekend and I'm thrilled to announce The Decorating Forum is featuring my little blog this week.
Pop on over to visit and share in chat and ideas regarding all things design, decorating and more!

We purchased our home in 2010 and one of the first things I noticed was the absence of awnings over some of the windows. Immediately I knew I could not live without some form of protection to stop rain coming through four windows on the bedroom wing. The house was architecturally designed in the early nineties but fancy not including awnings in a sub-tropical climate. While it may have been a trend back then I knew for my own peace of mind we would need to rectify the situation. During a hot Queensland summer I prefer to keep windows open for ventilation and last summer I was driven crazy because as soon as rain fell I would holler 'Rain' and those at home would rip through the house shutting these windows.
So..behold the beauty of our new window eyebrows!

My major wish before next summer was to get awnings in place. Mr red roses is very nifty at researching and sourcing requirements we need for this house renovation and he found this fabulous company online who make up awnings to your specifications. Hubs is most handy so while we still had the use of painters scaffolding he set to getting these babies up over the past week (one wing of the house is rather frighteningly high so we needed scaffolding to paint the exterior which was recently completed).

Oh yes he wears a harness to save falling...a must for this type of work. Just before I snapped this photo I was on the ground working the rope pulley to hoist the awnings up to be fitted on brackets. The design we chose blends in superbly and I couldn't be happier. Now I have the perfect solution to prevent rain pouring in and these windows and this wing of the house has been given much needed character.

I find myself stopping to admire the awnings and do a little happy dance not only as I no longer need to fear a sudden rain shower but the aesthetic is now softer and appealing to the eye.

I hope you love the windows new eyebrows as much as I do.

Action Aplenty...weather permitting

Just so you don't have the impression my life is all glamour and fabulousness here are a few pics of what's happening around the house.
Mr red roses borrowed painters trestles to paint the extremely high side of the house but of course it's done nothing but rain on this block of leave he's taken off work. Not to be deterred (only minor grumblings under his breath) he's doing man stuff instead under the house. This requires concrete. I tell you men just love playing with concrete mixers!
Plans are being finalized for submission to council for two exciting additions to our piece of paradise.
Fingers are crossed but I'm not holding my breath...council approval takes time.
Apparently.

Kitchen Love

Gosh it's been a week since my last post..time does fly.
To kick off this gloomy winter Monday in my neck of the woods I'm sharing photos of my kitchen. Those of you who've been following this blog since the early days (a year this August!) will know my family commenced a major renovation on our little piece of paradise set in the trees. A few of my blog friends have suggested I show more of my home and so here we are, the kitchen was a major exercise and I think it deserves to make an appearance on this little blog.
I was intending to share before pics then realised they're stored on the desktop and if I shut down the laptop to start again etc etc this post will never get up darlinks, so you will just have to use your imaginations.
So imagine an original 1990 kitchen in varying shades of blue with a servery bench top the size of a airport runway. We totally gutted the space in February 2011. The result is a design which Mr red roses and I conjured up. We'd renovated the kitchen in our last house using white cupboards and black bench tops and found that aesthetic suited us brilliantly so it was a no brainer to run with that scheme again. I can't see myself ever getting tired of black and white contrast. Clean, clutter free surfaces in my kitchen make my heart sing..
All in all I am beyond happy with the design and functionality. I hope you enjoy taking a wander through these photos I took on the iPhone soon after we moved in after the renovations.

I am very proud of my house because Mr red roses and I toiled extremely hard and extraordinary effort was poured into transforming this house.
You've surely heard the saying..'Blood Sweat and Tears', well it applied to us!

Entertaining is figuring in our lives once more since the dust has settled (figuratively speaking).
There's still a laundry to build and exciting plans for the outside entertaining area. All the fun and joy of major works (fingers crossed) are to commence in the not too distant future and the testament to our optimism is the cement mixer has been uncovered and hauled out to be press ganged into earning it's keep once again.

Wishing you happy tidings this week and stay safe.

Outdoor Deck Tin Roof Facelift

Award yourself full marks if you guessed this photo depicts roof insulation!
This home renovation job has kept me Mr red roses busy on and off for several weeks. The decks tin roof radiated an extremely uncomfortable level of heat in our sub-tropical climate so action was required. The difference is astounding and we can now look forward to sitting in this space and not swelter.

The roof is curved which is reminiscent of the early nineties design and while I was apprehensive of loosing this curve the outcome has really modernised the line and we're tickled pink. The beams are now repainted and deep slate grey against white is striking.
To fill the gap at the edge between tin and insulation fine snake proof mesh is being secured. That's right, I don't relish snakes or possums crawling into the gap and making themselves at home.
When the final touches are completed I will post new pics.

Next summer some enjoyment of beverages will be in order on the cool deck. Mr red roses has measured up a corner for his master BBQ area and that my friends will warrant it's own post!

An Unusual Ceiling

This ceiling deserves a post of it's own. Sitting here I've pondered how to describe the process of this make-over and I figure the photos will probably convey most of the story. Lots of wood, huge room and very dark atmosphere. Debate raged between family members and friends about how to tackle this expanse. Should we go with a whole new lower ceiling or fill every knot, sand, undercoat and paint or plasterboard and retain the unique design. So after much discussion we settled on filling the knots in the beams, sanding and painting white and the plasterer laid board over the rest and then we painted those too. The difference is astounding and I'm happy we maintained our ship like ceiling because it's a delight and a talking point with visitors.

Mr redroses and I painted the ceiling (and every other wall and ceiling in the house after painstaking preparation) and let me tell you it was a massive undertaking. Saved us bucket loads of money but I do not wish to paint another house again in my lifetime thank you very much.

Three of these gorgeous glass light fittings are placed in this family area. Overall the room has turned out beautifully and I'm pleased we considered all options before rushing in and making a huge mistake. If at all possible we like to retain as much character when renovating and work with the house, not against it. Saves a lot of heartache in the process.
I'll reveal the whole room once it's 100% completed with furnishings.

Tell me, do you love/like/detest holding a paintbrush?

Renovating

I have been going through photo files of this house renovation to figure out where to start sharing the journey to date. I suppose there is no better place than at the beginning.
Feb '11 in a scorching Queensland summer, 34C+ days. Could it have been any hotter and uncomfortable?

Did you know that a 'skip' is a girls best friend. We loaded her up in four days with the stripped out contents of the house (anything not worth salvaging) and a lovely man came and took it away on a truck.

I refrained from photographing the dirt and decaying rubber underlay trapped underneath the carpet. The pic is blurry but can you see The Boss sitting in her bed supervising. Most days she came along but was incredibly bored and less than enthusiastic at our endeavours.

The slate in our entry was so much fun to remove. Not. I guarantee darling husband and I lost a kilo each sweating through this 'little' job. Underneath the green goo are wooden floorboards.

I like to commence a reno with all boxes of tricks lined up like little soldiers in a row as this gives me hope  the proceeding days will not turn to hell. Of course my neat line was short lived.

My husband and I are no strangers to wielding paintbrushes but even I was amazed at the almost uni degree one needs nowadays when choosing a suitable colour, finish, rollers, brushes etc. We experienced hiccups due to the dreadful humidity when applying the paint. A path was worn to the Dulux trade centre. Must say the consultants are very helpful. One of the nice men even helped me decide which white to use after I threw 500 'white' coloured swatches in the air in desperation.

I became proficient at sanding which I might add is usually a job I loathe but modern technology makes it bearable. Makita and I spent many days together, dust mask essential.

Unfortunately my standard of dress suffered tremendously and I rotated three sets of work clothes for months. At the beginning I even attempted to maintain a pedi as my toes in summer are never a la naturale but alas even this treat went by the wayside. Oops not a very Workplace Health & Safety appropriate shot here but hey it was HOT.

All in all, in my opinion, renovating is not for the faint hearted but we endured and now live a pretty spiffy house which I'll share bits and pieces of over time. The end is in sight!
