Retro and Fabulous

While cleaning out my pantry the other day I snapped some pics of these retro treasures which belonged to my parents. To be honest I don't use these pieces but upon reflection I might just give them a new lease of life.
Especially after seeing the green and white Bessemer cocktail/dip server in the collectables shop recently with a price tag of $38.00

As a child in the sixties I thought my parents were very trendy owning these orange mugs. Who doesn't love an orange mug?
The bamboo tumblers were a favourite of my father's. He would collapse in a chair after working a long day and enjoy a beer from his favoured vessel

My mother loved to entertain and a desert (or 'sweets' as the term was back then) would always follow the meal. Usually a parfait of some description was in order

I recall my father concocting cocktails and he loved using this soda fountain for refreshing beverages

The Mexican lady and her donkey was a constant on our kitchen bench and every day mum would place a fresh flower in the cart

I really have no idea of the vintage of this set other than it is old! Here it sits proudly in my cabinet and I admit I'm too scared to use any piece as it is extremely delicate

Aha the infamous Bessemer

All that remains of a Noritake dinner set circa 1970's (?)

I have a feeling this lovely tray belonged to my grandmother

Now I can be extremely ruthless with decluttering but there are some treasures that I simply cannot part with. Maybe it's the sentimentality and memories...but I need to hold onto some of these precious links to my up bringing.

I bet you are holding onto precious memories in the form of collectables you never utilize? But you know what, if they bring you peace and joy, well, that's not such a bad thing is it!

  1. Well you know I will love all your retro pieces.

The Fire King peach lustre ware is really collectable in some circles. I wheel out my stuff that I haven't used in ages when I have friends around. Good conversation starter, I find.

  2. brismod.. haha I thought you might!
Thanks for confirming the mugs being Fire King, had a sticky on Ebay but couldn't find an exact match.
Growing up with these mugs as a child I've always taken them for granted.

Some things you definitely can't part with. It's not clutter, it's a life time of memories.

  7. Such a fun post! I thought I was good at decluttering, but I think I can match you parfait dish for parfait dish, floral glass for floral glass. Wish I had a Mexican donkey though!

Patricia.. I have tried to find info about this donkey to no avail. Parfait dishes were the ants pants!

  9. Whenever I go wandering around a local antique centre I'm constantly pointing out things that my parents and grandparents had. When we emigrated I brought some pieces with me that had real sentimental value and I would never part with them. You've just given me an idea for a blog post...

  12. What great pieces, oh and I think we should bring the term "sweet" what happened to that word, did it just become unfashionable?

I don't hava sentimental bone in my body for possessions, I'm ruthless!

  13. Oh the memories that are stirred up when we see vintage collectibles.
I love to listen in when people are walking about in an antique mall...there is usually some talk about who owned something when they were younger.

I have very few pieces in the bungalow that I do not use. We have next to no storage here.

  20. Thanks Brismod! I was wondering what the proper name for the mugs were. I recently had to empty my dear Auntie's china cabinet and she had a lovely "sweet" bowl set with a pattern embossed. My mother also uses the term "sweets". I love all the retro glassware etc. RR & C, my mother had a donkey as well! She used to put the Camelia's or Frangipani's in it. I do agree, we can't keep everything but need to hang onto some special items. x PS i did respond (a bit late) on the FF post re how to fix stains in old linen with some links for you :)
