Wall Displays

This morning as I sat in my favourite room soaking up the warm rays of sun streaming in the window, I flicked through this coffee table book I picked up recently at a book sale.
Flicking through the pages I noticed a scene which reminded me that my tastes have changed over the years and the techniques I'm using to decorate this house compared to our last big family Queenslander.
The rage in the eighties and nineties was to display numerous antique/vintage family portraits on one wall and our home was no exception.

Whilst we could not boast so many framed photos (below) on one wall we certainly dived into this decor with long passed family smiling down from their photos.
Living in a 100year old home helped carry off this aesthetic to perfection.

These days I prefer minimalism (not to mention less dusting) and only a few special prints from our travels were carefully considered before trotting off to the framers.
Adhering to my preferred black/white/silver theme works brilliantly in this house.

The creation below is a selection of Hanafuda playing cards bought in Kyoto Japan. Rather than hidden away in their little box I decided displaying in a frame would bring us pleasure. After researching the link I suspect two cards may have been inadvertently placed upside down? Oh well it's still beautiful.

The study is our private area to hang the framed photos of our children and a few special landscapes.
My decorating ideas have certainly evolved, but then again I have lived in six homes since marrying and I suppose each home has it's own ideas of how it's walls should be graced?

Do tell.....What is your preference for wall displays... photography, a beautiful painting or other?

*apologies if the links for favourite room and Queenslander are non responsive, I've double checked the URL's but no luck.

  1. Those cards are great, what a fantastic idea. I have a Qlder, but am drawing the line at an ancestral wall!

I currently have nothing on my walls. Nothing we currently own seems to go, and we have FAR too many framed photos, which I don't want all over the house anymore.

Right now I'm on the hunt for quirky, maybe a great original vintage poster or something would be a good start.

  2. The cards are beautifully displayed.
I have a few paintings, but I've realised that it's really sketches that I like the most, although I would like to buy one large abstract painting one day.

  3. I think you are right, the type of home you live in can often dictate the type of wall art, although after 5 homes I do have my favourites in which I can always find a spot for.

  4. Kathryn ~ me too, heaps of framed photos that I've packed away to deal with...later!

Tabs ~ we are on the lookout for something abstract for our entry , I think one has to wait until the perfect piece miraculously appears

SG ~ oh I agree, that's why our study houses some framed family ones we couldn't part with

  5. Annie, your framed works from travels are beautiful.

Like the other ladies, we have been through the family wall idea; I also went through the quilts-on-wall stage, and an over-abundance of paintings and other bits which eventually you simply evolve out of. Like many, we frame special travel works - it is the best souvenir. Currently working on simplification of our federation-style house - began with painting out all the exterior Heritage Green with lashings of white and cream.

  6. Patricia ~ been there too! Quilts on walls and heritage colours on the exterior and interior of the last house. It's fun to have a change.
Do you love the white/cream effect?

  7. Yes, Annie, loving the whites and creams. Painted out the heritage green picture rail also, and like it much better blended into the walls.
