Photography Decisions

Today I accompanied my daughter to a bay side area while she researched locations for a fashion shoot.
As she clicked away with her high tech camera I snapped away with my iPhone because my dinky El Cheapo camera was at home.
I'm impressed with how this shot of the pier turned out, even though my finger is noticeable top left hand
corner. Just between us lets imagine that smudge is a threatening storm cloud. Works for me.

This brings me to ask a question of you lovely readers. My photography skills are minimal at best but I'm enjoying immensely taking photos for this blog and am pondering the move into upgrading my equipment. I don't wish to rely on using my daughter's expensive camera.
What say you guys and girls?
Have I shown enough promise throughout this blog to warrant forking out for a new bells and whistles camera plus the time spent learning how to operate it or stick with my easy peasy little model I now use?
Would a better camera make that much difference?
Am I kidding myself or should I throw caution to the wind and believe I'm worthy of producing fantastic photos...one day?

To be honest I'm really amazed at the thrill I get snapping pics solely for RRC, never been terribly into photography but now I'm seeing the world in a whole new light.

Decisions. Decisions.

  2. You are a good photographer. My digital is very old and it takes wonderful pictures but when folks see it they smile. We often times get lured into the marketing and really what we have is sufficient, newer is not necessarily better!

  3. Have you tried any of the editing stuff out there? Lots of it is free and if you don't want to mess around too much most of them have a one click enhance feature. Only saying as these will help anything but the really bad photos.
I have tried a few and really like picnik.
Saying that, I did treat myself to a new camera this year - I got a Panasonic DMC-TZ10 which is doing the job well as much as I can tell!

  4. A-M.. thanks for your encouragement.

Helen.. yes I agree, newer can be problematic and not all it's cracked up to be.

Beth.. thanks for this suggestion re editing programs. I'd not considered this at all.

Thanks girls, you're giving me food for thought x

  5. That's a stunning pic with the iPhone, my i phone pics are always blurry. I don't know how to use a proper camera, I say go for it, you're interested and you have a good eye.

  6. You certainly would have fun with a new camera and your daughter sounds like she could teach you the basics and then you would be able to play around with all those wonderful settings!

That image of the boardwalk and the ocean if suitable for framing!

  7. I think that is a beautiful picture you've posted! And if you really like taking pictures and it brings you joy, it would probably be a great investment to get a nicer camera. =) You and your daughter could take pictures together.

  8. Hi Annie, your photos are great. Love the old jetty. If you feel the urge to buy a new camera, go for it. I can totally identify with the way blogging makes us begin to notice interesting photo opportunities where pre-blog, perhaps we would not. My new Sony power-shot is great fun, and I am learning its tricks one by one: too much information all at once just confuses moi!

  9. Hi Annie,

Go for it! That photo of the wharf is beautiful. Just imagine what you could produce with a "bells and whistle" camera and the know how. I plan on buying a new camera and hopefully finding the time to do a photography course in the new year. I'm excited for you, Annie and look forward to seeing your photos.

  10. I'm with you. I need to extend myself and lash out on some new equipment, but you are not doing too badly. You should have said "I deliberately placed my finger there to create the effect of an an intense storm brewing!!" Looks fantastic!

  12. It's always fun to go shopping, for just about anything! Although, I must say, I have the "bells and whistle" SLR camera sitting in my office and I still find myself snapping away with my iPhone. Go figure! I'm sure your photos will turn out great either way Annie. x Jode

  13. Tabs.. yes I'm interested and that's a good place to be and you're fab at self-portrait outfit pics, something I've not mastered x

Hostess.. you know what, my hubs thinks we could erase that 'storm cloud' and frame this. We both like dark moody pics x

Morgan.. I think my daughter might get frustrated with her 'take forever to aim and shoot' mother! x

Patricia.. so glad you love your new camera. I agree about too much info at once..my eyes just glaze over x how's Canada?

Kel.. a photography course would be wonderful, imagine the learning involved x

SG.. that's funny, my hubs mentioned the same thing. Let us know what camera you buy x

Mimi.. thanks M, means alot to me that a designer with a good eye likes my pics x

  14. Jode.. Hi J, I hear you, that's why I recently bought an iPhone to always have available in my handbag and be prepared, more portable than cameras.
